Sports in Winnipeg
No matter what your passion, there are many choices of sports in Winnipeg to participate in or to watch as a spectator.
Winnipeg has three professional sports teams to choose: the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern Baseball League and the Manitoba Moose of the America Hockey League.
When you talk of sports in Winnipeg, what quickly comes to mind are: curling, hockey and bowling. The city of Winnipeg has long cold winters and Winnipeggers turn to these sports to participate in the winter months. In fact, because of the enormous amount of it’s participants, Winnipeg has become known as the Sponge Hockey Capital of the World.
We are known for many other sports as well: soccer, golf, volleyball, football, basketball, tennis, running and many, many more. Winnipeg’s greatest claim to fame is hosting the Pan-American’s not one but twice: in 1967 and again in 1999. The city’s volunteers made these games an event second to none.
When you talk about sports in Winnipeg, you can’t help but mention the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets were the city’s professional hockey team which started first in the WHA (World Hockey Association) and then later in the NHL (National Hockey League). Unfortunately for Winnipeggers, the team moved to Phoenix in 1996. While the city loves the Manitoba Moose of the AHL, we still hope for the return of the National Hockey League one day, again.
Just outside of the perimeter of Winnipeg, there is the Assiniboia Downs racetrack offering live and simulcast horseracing as well as VLT’s.
Victory Lane Speedway is located just 5 minutes south of the city is a high bank dirt oval facility for the racing enthusiast.
