Winnipeg Parks
What do cold winters and hot summers have in common? The answer is, Winnipeg Parks. Winnipeggers love to go skating, skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing during winter months and summer brings swimming, running, Frisbee, soccer and of course sun tanning. These are all activities that you can enjoy in the numerous Winnipeg Parks.
Assiniboine Park is the city’s biggest park with over 378 acres along the Assiniboine River. The park has numerous offerings but is most famous for the zoo.
Kildonan Park has some of the oldest and largest trees in Manitoba and is home to Canada’s longest running outdoor theatre, Rainbow Stage.
King’s Park, which borders on the Red River, has in the centre of the park, a beautiful Japanese Pagoda gardens.
Little Mountain Park is known for its hiking trails and site of many school cross country running events over the years.
St.Vital Park is situated on the Red River. This is a quiet family park, which offers a skating rink on the pond in winter months.
If you have decided to take a drive or a leisurely stroll through Winnipeg Parks, you can’t help but notice something common to all the parks: runners, joggers and walkers. You will notice many groups and individuals, especially in the morning at Assiniboine, Kildonan and St.Vital parks, taking in the beautiful scenery and getting fit.
People are very friendly (especially in the morning). If you don’t believe me, take our challenge: Try going to one of the parks around 9 AM in the summer and see if you can complete a lap without someone saying: “Good morning!” to you.
If you have never jogged or run before, you can also visit
runningroom.com
which offers some “Learn to run clinics” for beginners, along great running gear.
Get fit, make new friends and take in the beauty of all the great parks in Winnipeg.
